What is the Best Shaving Soap? [2021]

What is the Best Shaving Soap? 2021

A good shaving soap should provide superior lubrication to assist the razor in sliding over your skin. It should also soften your beard and skin. And lastly, it should make your skin feel and smell fresh.

One of the best things I love about shaving soaps is…the way it makes my bathroom smell. And my face too.

Edwin Jagger Shaving Soap

GBS Signature Ocean Driftwood Shaving Soap

GBS or Gents Barbershop & Spa Company is an American company located in Warwick, Rhode Island. They offer high quality shaving products at very competitive prices.

I bought the GBS Classic Shaving Kit which included the Ocean Driftwood shaving soap. I have to say right off the bat that this soap smells fantastic. It makes me want to shave. My bathroom smells like this soap all the time.

GBS shaving soap is one of the best lathering shaving soaps that I have used so far. It lathers quickly and is very thick and won’t drip easily. It stays put on your face and does not run like other shaving soaps. It only takes me about 2 minutes to work up a good thick lather. It absolutely smells great. Not too perfumey…just clean smelling all day.

The GBS Shaving soap ingredients are all 97% natural. It doesn’t get much better than this. Buy it.

Lather and Wood Shaving Company Shaving Soap

Lather and Wood shaving soap is made in Seattle, Washington. So, it’s made in the USA. Their soaps are crafted in small batches to ensure the absolute best quality. The ingredient list is minimal; Stearic Acid, Water, Tallow, Coconut Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Glycerin, Shea Butter, Fragrance and Sodium Hydroxide. That’s it. It certainly has less ingredients than most shaving soaps and that’s a good thing. I like few ingredients and natural ones if possible.

Lather and Wood shaving soaps create a super thick rich lather quickly and without a lot of effort. The lather sticks to your face and does not run. The lather also does not dissipate while shaving. After I’m done shaving, there is still a lot of lather in the cup. Some shaving soap lather dissipates in 10 minutes or so.

Lather and Wood shaving soap produces a lather that lubricates and softens your beard for a perfect shave. It also cleans and disinfects your skin. The fresh scent lasts for many hours afterwards. I like the Sandalwood scent.

Viking Revolution Shaving Soap

Viking Revolution offers everything related to hair from beards to mustaches to hair on your head from razors to soap and hair styling gel too. They veer away from harsh chemicals that can be harmful to your hair and skin. Viking Revolution strives for making their products the best quality but at reasonable prices. And they have done a great job.

Viking Revolution Shaving Soap

Viking Revolution offers a 4 puck shaving soap set. Each shaving soap puck or bar is scented differently and 100% natural. The 4 scents are Sandalwood, Cedar & Pine, Bay Rum and Clary Sage. The scents are manly and not too overpowering. They do smell great.

The Viking Revolution shaving soaps are great for shaving but also great for washing your body too. You can use the soap to wash anything. It makes your skin feel and smell clean and manly.

These soaps lather easily and do not drip. They clean and soften your beard making it easy to cut with a safety razor or disposable razor. 4 shaving soap bars or 2.7″ pucks retail for $15.00. It’s quite a bargain at $3 per bar of shaving soap.

I recently tried the Sandalwood scented shaving soap in the shower to bath with and shave my legs. I unwrapped the bar from the plastic wrapper and smelled it. It has a very mild sandalwood scent. I like something a little stronger. The GBS shaving soap is much stronger but not overpowering.

Anyway I showered with the sandalwood scented soap and it lathered fairly well but not like the GBS or Van Der Hagen or Williams Mug shaving soaps. The lather was less and not as thick. It lathers as well as a regular bath soap. I soaped up my legs and used the Parker 69CR safety razor to shave my legs. The lather worked well for lubrication. The shave was close and very smooth. No nicks or razor burn or any irritation.

The Viking Revolution shaving soap is a good choice for bathing or shaving. I’ll try the Bay Rum Spice scented soap next.

Williams Mug Shaving Soap

James B. Williams manufactured the first shaving soap to be used in a mug or cup in 1840. Williams shaving soap is the #1 shaving soap today. It is one the the best lathering shaving soaps on the market. And yes, shaving soap has been around for a very long time and if you want to use the original shaving soap then Williams is the one.

Williams Mug Shaving Soap

The Williams Mug shaving soap is not scented or at least not much. It has a very mild clean smell without strong perfumes which is good. I don’t care for strong perfumes that can overpower your nose for hours. I prefer a clean manly scent. It lathers easily is very thick. It does not drip when applied to your face like some soaps. It stays put. It softens your beard and cleans your skin nicely.

I was pleasantly surprised when I tried Williams Mug shaving soap in the shower to bath with and to shave my legs. It looks “plain Jane” and I really didn’t expect much. The soap is roughly shaped and not perfect like the other more expensive soaps. However it’s a “sleeper”. It lathered up very nicely with a thick rich foam. A little goes a long way. The lather was easy to spread all over and made my skin feel clean and fresh but not dried out like regular bath soaps. I do like a scent though. But the light clean smell was nice.

I lathered up my legs and used an Edwin Jagger safety razor to shave them. WOW. Very smooth. Williams Mug shaving soap really made the razor glide over my skin with no sensation of cutting hair. Amazing! I’m going to not use shaving gel anymore. This is far better.

Williams mug shaving soap does not dry out your skin like regulars soaps can. It leaves your skin soft and clean. It retails for $3.00 per bar/puck.

Van Der Hagen Shaving Soap

Van Der Hagen shaving soap is another premium soap with few ingredients which are mostly all natural. No harsh chemicals that will dry out your skin or cause irritation. This is a great shaving soap that will clean, moisten and soften hair and skin.

I bought a bar or puck of Van Der Hagen shaving soap in Target for $3.49. It has a very mild scent and makes your skin feel clean and fresh and not dried out. It works well for shaving and helps the razor slide over your skin. No nicks or razor burn. I love the clean smell.

You can use the Van Der Hagen shaving soap to shave or wash your body. You can use it like any soap and it’s actually better than most bath soaps because it’s more natural with Shea Butter, Coco Butter, Glycerin, Mango Butter and water.

I wanted to try one of the shaving soaps in the shower, as a bathing soap. So I decided to try the Van Der Hagen shaving soap. I also wanted to try a safety razor on my legs. I’ve only used a safety razor on my face in the past. How well do they shave legs?

So I showered using the Van Der Hagen shaving soap. Let me say this right away….It’s Amazing! It lathers up really nice and thick. A little goes a long way. It smells fantastic too. The scent is very light and manly. This shaving soap is amazing in the shower. It leaves your skin soft moisturized and not dry like normal bath soaps.

I soaped up my legs with the Van Der Hagen shaving soap and tried my Edwin Jagger DE89 safety razor. It glided effortlessly and cut without any sensation. I had to check the razor to make sure there was a blade in it. Wow, what a smooth shave! The Van Der Hagen soap lubricated extremely well. I was surprised. This was the best shave on my legs so far. It really beats any disposable razor by far.
