Does More Blades Mean a Better Shave?

More blades in a razor does not determine whether you get a better shave or not. What makes a better shave is the quality of the blade or blades and the design of the razor. A high quality single blade razor like a safety razor will give you a better shave than a poorly designed 4 blade disposable razor.

I own and have used 5 different safety razors along with about 10 different disposable razors in the past year. I enjoy writing about shaving and have to try products in order to write about them. It’s a lot of fun.

Single Blade Safety Razors

I have used about 5 or 6 different safety razors in the past year along with 5 different brand double edge razor blades. Some are really good and some are not as good.

A good safety razor matched with good double edge razor blades will give you a shave that is as good as any razor, even a 4 or 5 blade disposable razor. It’s the quality of the razor/blade and not the number of blades that count.

One of my favorite safety razors is the Parker 69CR safety razor matched with Feather double edge razor blades. The Parker 69CR razor is well designed and balanced to make it easy to maneuver and shaves smoothly and very close. The heavy weight makes it cut without effort. The weight of the razor pulls it down your face. You do not have to pull it.

Feather Hi-Stainless double edge razor blades are most likely the best or sharpest I’ve used so far. You don’t even know that you are cutting hair. There is no sensation…the razor just glides over your skin. Astra double edge razor blades are also very sharp. I wrote this review on double edge safety razor blades.

I also really like the Edwin Jagger DE89 safety razor. It’s made in England and is very high quality with a reasonable price tag.

Single Blade Disposable Razors

There are not very many single blade disposable razors available since the multi-blades are the most marketed. I think the Gillette Good News razor is the only single blade disposable razor that I have found. They have been around for a very long time.

Gillette Good News razors are very cheap and you get what you pay for. They are OK in the shave department. There are many razors that are much better. I did not find the single blade to be very sharp compared to the safety razor and Feather double edge razor blades. The Good News razor seemed to pull when cutting. There are better disposable razors than the Good news.

2 Blade Disposable Razors

I have used a few different 2 blade disposable razors and found the Gillette Sensor 2 Plus to be the best 2 blade. The Sensor 2 Plus has sharp blades and a good lubrication strip. The handle is not great but it works. The Sensor 2 Plus is the best cheap disposable razor on the market. I still use on every now and then.

The Sensor 2 Plus will give you a close shave and about as close as you can get, even as close as a 4 or 5 blade disposable razor. It is hard to beat for about 80 cents per razor.

3 Blade Disposable Razors

This is where you’ll find some really good disposable razors. My all time favorite is the Gillette Mach 3 with 2nd place going to the BIC Flex 3 razor. These 2 disposable razors give you a very good shave.

The Gillette Mach 3 is a fantastic disposable razor. But it’s not because it has 3 blades. The Mach 3 is great because the blades are very sharp and the razor has an excellent design. I think it would be the same razor with 1 or 2 blades.

The Gillette Mach 3 is a dream to shave with. It cuts hair effortlessly and smoothly. There is no sensation of cutting hair. It just glides over your skin. The handle is designed well and fits your hand comfortably. It’s easy to maneuver and handles very well. The handle texture is totally non-slip even with shaving gel all over it. The Mach 3 is the best designed disposable razor.

The BIC Flex 3 is another fantastic disposable razor. The design is more traditional than the Mach 3 but does shave very close and smoothly. The handle is also ergonomic and comfortable to hold. The handle texture is really nice. It’s very “grippy”. This is one razor that will never slip out of your hand.

The BIC Flex 3 does not shave close and smooth because it has 3 blades. It shaves close because the blades are high quality and very sharp. The lubrication strip is very good and helps the blades slide over your skin without irritation or nicks.

4 Blade Disposable Razors

I think 4 blades is just too many. I’ve tried a few 4 blade razors and was not really impressed with any of them. The only 4 blade disposable razor that I liked was the BIC Flex 4. The other 4 blade razors just scraped my skin. There is a big difference between 3 blades and 4 blades. 4 blades clearly does not shave better than 3 or 2.

The BIC Flex 4 razor was the only one that I may use in the future. It does shave nicely but not as nice as the Mach 3 or Flex 3. The Flex 4 is designed really well just like the Flex 3. The handle fills your hand and is very comfortable to hold. The rubber like handle texture is most likely the best I’ve felt. It’s definitely non-slip.

The Flex 4 blades are very sharp and will give you a really close shave without irritation or nicks. It also glides over your skin nicely. I can certainly tell after the shave that I used a 4 blade. My skin feels a little raw, even when using a really good shaving gel. 4 blades scraping your skin is just too much.

5 Blade Disposable Razors

I knew before testing a 5 blade disposable razor that it would not be good. I was right. I only tested two 5 blade disposable razors. The 2 were the Gillette Sensor 5 and the BIC Flex 5 Hybrid.

Both razors have a somewhat large head containing 5 blades. On the first stroke, I knew 5 blades is overkill. It’s just too much drag or scraping. You can feel the difference quickly. The blades are very sharp and do cut close but you don’t need 5 blades to do that. The larger 5 blade head makes it hard to shave under the nose and the chin. The blade head is just too big.

This is proof that it’s not the number of blades that make a razor better but the quality of the blades and the razor itself.

Many people say or complain that they hate shaving. I actually like shaving and trying new razors makes it all the more fun.

I often thought that more blades was better. Because each blade cuts more of the hair right? So 5 blades should cut hair 5 times shorter. Wrong!

After trying or testing many razors, I have found that 1 blade can cut as good or better than 2, 3, 4 or 5 blades.

More proof is to go get shaved by a professional barber and see what kind of razor they use. Most professional barbers will use a straight razor which is a single blade razor. And the shave will be very close. You’ll never see a barber using a 3 or 4 blade disposable razor.
