Which is the Best Shaving Cream? [2021]

Which is the Best Saving Cream?

The best shaving creams provide a slippery lubrication film that will allow a sharp razor blade to slide over the skin while cutting the hair. It can also soften hair and skin which makes the shaving experience pleasant instead of painful.

Let’s take a look at some of the best shaving creams. I have used many shaving creams and gels and foams.

Cremo Shaving Cream

Cremo is probably the most popular shaving cream on the market and for good reason….it’s fantastic. The founders of Cremo, Mike Boone and Kyle Schroeder, set out to create the absolute best [or Barber Grade] shaving cream possible after using inferior shaving products for years. They said, “There must be a better way.” And there was.

Cremo Shaving Cream

Cremo shaving cream is not cheap at $7.99 per 6 oz. squeeze tube. The tube should last about 3 months depending on how much you like to use. You should only need a small dime sized dap to lather your face.

I used to use shaving foams and gels for over 30 years to shave my face. I never looked at shaving creams until I started using a safety razor. The first time I used the Cremo shaving cream I was surprised how slippery it is. It is VERY SLIPPERY. Like nothing I’ve ever used before. It’s like grease. And a little goes a long way.

If you’re interested in safety razors, please read my review.

Cremo shaving cream is the slipperiest shaving product I have ever used. It performs extremely well and makes any razor, safety or disposable, glide over your skin without effort. It also softens hair and your skin. After the shave, your skin feels soft and moisturized and not scraped and raw.

Cremo is not like using a shaving gel or foam. You soak your face or skin with warm water and then squeeze out a small dime sized dap of Cremo and spread it over your skin in a circular motion. If you add a little water to the Cremo, it will become even more slippery. Now you can start shaving with any type razor. Cremo shaving cream works great with any type razor, even a straight razor.

I love everything about Cremo shaving cream with the exception of washing out the washcloth when you get Cremo on it. It does not wash out easily like a shaving foam does. It’s greasy and takes some effort to wash it out. You have to use soap and water to get it all out. Aside from that minor issue, I love Cremo.

Van Der Hagen Shave Butter

Van Der Hagen makes some of the best shaving products available even though you might not heard of them. They make some of the best shaving soaps. You have to try them.

Shave Butter is a super slick shaving cream that makes any razor or blade glide over your skin without effort. You don’t even know you’re shaving. Say good bye to razor burn and skin irritation and dry skin. Shave butter is like a skin lotion and skin lubricant all in one.

Another plus is that Shave Butter won’t dry out or dissipate like shaving gel, soap and foams do. It will stay moist for hours.

Van Der Hagen Shave Butter is simple to use. Just wash your face or skin with warm water. Squeeze out a small portion of shave butter and apply to your skin in a circular fashion. You can add a little water to make it more slippery. Now shave.

When you’re done shaving, you can rub in the remaining shave butter. It acts like a skin lotion too. It has Shea, Mango and Coco butter in it. It’s great for your skin and will prevent your skin from drying out after shaving. Shave Butter retails for $5.99 per 6 ounce tube.

Taylor of Old Bond Street Shaving Cream

Taylor of Old Bond Street products are manufactured in London, OK and are as you might expect premium. They offer luxury shaving cream and it is very good. It’s the ultimate way to pamper your skin when shaving.

Taylor of Old Bond Street was established in 1854. So they have been around for a very long time. They must be doing something right?

Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream comes in a plastic bowl and is 150 grams in weight, which is about 5.3 ounces. A screw on cap keeps the cream fresh and contamination free.

So what’s in the shaving cream?

Water, Stearic Acid, Myristic Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Coconut Acid, Glycerin, Perfume, Triethanolamine, Sodium Hydroxide, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone.

There are only 11 ingredients which in today’s standards is very low. If you’re looking for products with fewer and more natural ingredients then this is one to check out.

TOBS [Taylor of Old Bond Street] is a very thick and rich cream that will moisturize and soften your skin and hair. It’s very lubricating and makes any razor glide over your skin. You will not get razor burn or any skin irritation that can be caused by a razor blade scraping your skin. There is nothing like a shaving cream. If you are using a shaving foam or gel, you will be amazed when you try a shaving cream. It’s way different.

There are 9 fragrances to choose from. I love the Sandalwood scent. It’s manly but not too strong. It retails for $16.99 per tub.

The Art of Shaving Shaving Cream

The Art of Shaving offers high end luxury shaving products from Proctor & Gamble. They are made with few ingredients and are hypoallergenic. If you are looking for natural ingredients that are safe for your skin then check the shaving cream out.

The Art of Shaving shaving cream

The Sandalwood Shaving Cream is one of my favorites because the scent is mild and manly. You can use the shaving cream with a shaving brush or just with your fingers. it works fine with both. It’s made with Coconut Acid which is really just coconut oil and natural extracts. It also has a high concentration of glycerin and no dyes or alcohol. Glycerin is derived form vegetable oil or animal fats and is a good moisturizer for your skin.

The Art of Shaving shaving cream provides excellent lubrication and softens hair and skin. It will also condition your skin. You don’t have to wash it off after shaving. You can rub it in and it will act like a skin lotion. It smells terrific too.

You use a shaving cream just like a shaving foam or gel. You squeeze a small portion out or dab some out of the tub and lather it up on your skin. You can add a little water to create more lather. I use circular motions for a few minutes and then shave with either a safety razor or disposable razor. After I’m done shaving, I rub the remaining cream into my skin.

The Art of Shaving products are top of the line. The shaving cream is super slippery. Shaving creams are much thicker than gels or foams and they lubricate much better. You won’t get razor burn or skin irritations any more. No nicks either.

The Art of Shaving shaving cream comes in squeeze tubes and tubs and retails for about $24 for the 5 ounce tub. It’s not cheap but it is very good.

Proraso Shaving Cream

Proraso was founded in 1908 by Ludovico Martelli and has been producing the finest shaving products for a very long time. Proraso only uses the finest safe ingredients in their shaving cream. Proraso shaving cream is a vegetable-stearin based formula with added botanical and natural oils that heal and protect skin. It’s extremely slippery and will make any razor glide over your skin without sensation. It is best used like shaving soap. Add a small dab onto a good shaving brush that has soaked in hot water for several minutes. Now work the brush into your stubble in a swirling motion. You should be able to create a really thick and rich lather. Now shave.

You can also use your hands instead of the shaving brush. Just mix a little cream and water together to create some suds. Now apply it to your face and massage it into your skin. Now shave.

Proraso shaving cream will protect your skin from razor burn, nicks and skin irritations plus moisturize at the same time.

Proraso shaving cream comes in a 5.2 ounce squeeze tube and sells forĀ  about $10.00. It’s not cheap but it is very good. One tube should last about 3 months.

Gillette Pure Shaving Cream

Another great shaving cream that is safe and with few ingredients is Gillette’s Pure shaving cream. It contains NO alcohol, dyes, parabens or sulfates.

Let’s take a look at the ingredients…

Water, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Glycerin, Coconut Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Triethanolamine, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Menthol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil

The infused Aloe will not only lubricate but also heal and soothe your skin after the shave. Aloe is an excellent topical medication for minor skin conditions like scrapes, razor burn, cuts, etc. It helps skin heal faster.

Pure shaving cream has been around for 80 years and is an excellent product that is super slippery and soothing to the skin.

Gillette Pure shaving cream is a good bargain at about $4.00 per 6 ounce tube.

Does Shaving Creme Actually Do Anything?

Does Shaving Creme Actually Do Anything?

Shaving creme does several things to make shaving easier and more comfortable. I won’t shave without it. Cremes soften hair to make it easier to cut. They also lubricate the skin to prevent scraping and cuts. Now, shaving cremes do even more…

Shaving Creme History

The first shaving cream was used in about 3000 BC. It was a mixture of animal fat and wood alkali. It was applied to the beard in preparation for shaving. Until the 20th century, soap was used to prepare faces for shaving. Later oil was added for lubrication. Soap and water was used for the sole purpose of softening the beard.

Shaving Cremes – Present Day 2020

We have come a long way from the earliest shaving cremes. Shaving cremes now are quite complex formulas that do many things like soften hair, soften skin, lubricate, medicate, moisturize, nourish and heal. Ohhh and smell nice too.

Let’s discuss the benefits of shaving creme.

Softens Hair – this is a “must have” for shaving. Try dry shaving. If you try to shave without softening hair, the razor will pull and most likely nick your skin. Dry hair is harder to cut. Hot water, soap and shaving creme work really well at softening hair. Shaving creme contains water, which is what softens the hair. Shaving with a good creme makes shaving pleasant.

Lubricates Skin – a good shaving creme makes shaving smooth and close. Lubrication prevents the sharp blades from scraping your skin and causing a rash or razor burn. It also reduces skin/blade friction which will prolong the life of the razor. The razor blades will stay sharp longer.

Medicates Skin – some shaving cremes contain ingredients that are medicinal to your skin like Aloe and Vitamin E. These 2 ingredients help your skin heal and stay healthy. Shaving is hard on your skin, so treat it right during and after the shave. Aloe is a fantastic healer.

Other ingredients that are helpful and healing to skin are Chamomile and Witch Hazel extract. Shaving gels and cremes have come along way.

Cleanses Your Skin – most shaving cremes, believe it or not, contain soap. Usually 20-30% is soap. Soap cleans and disinfects your skin. This is especially good when you consider nicks and cuts that can happen during a shave. There is bacteria on your skin when you shave. Any cuts could allow the bacteria to get into your skin and multiply. Then you end up with an infection. Soap in the shaving creme will kill the bacteria.

Nourishes Skin – Vitamin E and Aloe are great for healing and providing nutrients to your skin while shaving. The human skin is able to absorb Vitamin A directly and is then turned into Retinol by the liver. Retinol stimulates new cell production which keeps your skin looking young and healthy. Retinol is also effective in stimulating collagen production which reduces or prevents wrinkling.

Aloe contains enzymes, antioxidants, vitamin A and vitamin C. All of these are good for your skin. These help your skin heal from injury or skin ailments like dry skin or eczema. Aloe Vera is also anti-inflammatory. Aloe will help scrapes, cuts and nicks heal quicker and without infection. Aloe is the “Holy Grail” of skin care.

Softens and Moisturizes Skin – shaving cremes contain water and oil. Water re-hydrates your skin and makes it soft and supple. Dry skin can crack and bleed and then fail to provide a barrier between your body and bacteria and viruses. Dry skin also itches and can become red and inflamed. Healthy skin is a hydrated skin.

Oil in shaving cream will help seal in moisture by providing an evaporation barrier. It stops or slows down water evaporation. Your skin will stay moist and healthy.

Fresh Scent – this is an added bonus that I really appreciate…a nice fresh smell after a shave. It makes you smell and feel refreshed and ready for the day.

My Favorite Shaving Cremes and Gels

Edge Shaving Gel
I’ve been using Edge shaving gel for many years and it is hard to beat for lubrication and softening hair. It’s a gel that you work up a lather with and then apply to your face or wherever. It’s very thick and creamy. It makes your skin slippery and helps the razor slide over your skin. I never get any nicks or razor burn. My skin feels soft and hydrated afterwards. It’s refreshing.

Edge Shaving Gel easily rinses out of razors, your hands and wash cloths. This is a consideration for me. Sometimes I get shaving gel on my shirt while shaving. It’s nice when I can just wipe it off completely. I don’t want to have to change shirts.

Cremo Shaving Creme
Cremo shaving creme is amazing. You have to try it at least once. It is the absolute most slippery shaving creme I’ve ever tried.

When shaving with Cremo, you have no sensation of shaving hair. It’s very smooth. It’s more like a grease than a creme. It’s thick. It’s not a gel or foam and does not lather up. You apply some on your hand and then rub it on your skin. Now shave. It’s incredible. It smells great too. Try the Sandalwood.

The only reason I don’t use it now is because it’s harder to rinse out of a wash cloth because its greasy. Other shaving gels and foams rinse out with water easily. Cremo requires soap and water to get it out of fabric. If you get it on your shirt while shaving, you’ll need to change shirts.

Nivea Sensitive Shaving Gel
I just bought this and tried it twice. WOW. It’s super thick and lathers up great. It provides good lubrication and moisture that softens hair and skin. It smells fantastic. I really like it. It contains no alcohol nor strong perfumes. Alcohol and some perfumes can irritate your skin. Nivea is enriched with Vitamin E and Witch Hazel extract along with Chamomile. These ingredients nurture your skin.

Nivea Shaving Gel rinses easily from your razor, hands and wash cloths. It’s not greasy or oily. This is a great shaving gel.

Take a look at some of the great shaving products at Nivea USA.
